Session overview: This workshop will introduce participants to a variety of ethical principles and provide a decision making model to aid them in ensuring that decisions are made ethically within their service area.

Trainer: Pauline Martel, BA, CPS

Pauline has dedicated 36 years to the field of prevention and treatment working directly with children and families in alcohol and other drug programs.  She has been a statewide Ethics trainer since 1998 and maintains her CPS certification. After retiring from Adapt, headquartered in Roseburg, OR, she continues as an adjunct instructor at Umpqua Community College.

Target Audience: 

  • Staff needing Ethics continuing education credits for CPS (Certified Prevention Specialist) or CHES (Certified Health Education Specialist)
  • Public health staff seeking Ethics training for professional development
  • People interested in learning more about how to successfully navigate ethical dilemmas in the work place

Learning objectives: 
At the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify how personal values and assumptions impact ethical decision-making
  • Define and use the Mental Health and Addiction Certification Board of Oregon’s (MHACBO) Behavioral Health Ethics Principles for resolving ethical dilemmas
  • Become familiar with HIPAA, FERPA, 42cfr Part 2 regulations for ethical performance by behavioral health and related professionals
  • Recognize and resolve specific ethical dilemmas

Education Credits: 

  • Provided through MHACBO (Mental Health and Addiction Counseling Board of Oregon)
  • Approved for 6 credit hours of CPS credits (Certified Prevention Specialist)
  • Approved for 5.5 credit hours of CHES/MCHES credits (Certified Health Education Specialist)
