Honor and Celebrate

Community Health Workers Awareness Week, August 28 - September 1, increases awareness of CHW identity, roles, impact on communities, and leadership, and aims to promote policies that respect, protect, and authentically partner with the CHW vision.

OPHA holds deep respect for CHWs, as they bring health equity to life with high quality, comprehensive, and culturally responsive services. Get connected to the organizations with CHW programs in Oregon, including the Oregon Community Health Workers Association, Project Access Now, Next Door Inc., Familias en Acción, the Latino Network, Unite Oregon, the Micronesian Islander Community, and many more.

The 80th Annual Conference and Meeting is Monday, October 7 and Tuesday, October 8 at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. 

 

Announcements 

  • Nominations are open for the Annual Public Health Awards! Every year, thousands of public health professionals in Oregon engage, innovate, and make an impact. At OPHA, we are committed to acknowledging and celebrating the enduring influence these individuals have. Nominate a Public Health Champion today!

  • Free OPHA Membership to recent graduates! The Oregon Public Health Association is offering a free one-year membership or renewal to students upon graduation or up to six months after graduation from a public health or nursing program. To receive a year of free membership, select “Student” when you  sign up, and use the discount code "GRAD". 

  • Check out the Climate and Health in Oregon Report for 2023, and learn how the Governor, Oregon Legislature, Oregon Health Authority and other state agencies, health departments of federally recognized Tribes, local public health authorities, and community-based organizations are making investments in strategies to prepare for the uncertain future.

 

Conferences and Webinars

  • The Safe States Annual Injury and Violence Prevention Conference is August 20-22 in Portland, Oregon. Hundreds of professionals and advocates will come together to share best practices and innovative solutions, discuss emerging issues and new research. Stop by the OPHA exhibit booth while at this event!

  • The Alcohol and Cannabis Policy Summits, are August 20 and 21. Oregon Recovers would like to invite you to attend one or both of two single-day policy summits to develop a shared agenda on the policies needed to reduce the harms of alcohol and cannabis in Oregon.

  • The HHS Finalized Section 1557 Nondiscrimination Rule: Its Impacts on RHCs webinar is August 21, 11-12 pm. The Department of Health and Human Services, through the Office of Civil Rights, released a final rule regarding section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act, titled Nondiscrimination in Health Programs and Activities. Listen in to learn about the impacts on Rural Health Clinics and how to ensure compliance. This ORH webinar features Sarah Hohman from the National Association of Rural Health Clinics.

  • The PHAB Pathways Recognition Overview webinar is Tuesday, September 10, at 11 am. Pathways Recognition is a program designed to support performance improvement efforts, strengthen infrastructure, and facilitate public health system transformation for local, Tribal, and territorial public health departments not yet ready for accreditation.

  • The 2024 CCO Oregon Conference is Wednesday, October 2 from 8:30-4:30 pm at the Salem Convention Center. The 11th annual conference will continue the legacy of providing informative and engaging content, featuring a diverse range of sessions, panelists, and discussions aimed at advancing coordinated care in Oregon.

  • The 41st Annual Oregon Rural Health Conference is October 2 – 4, at the Riverhouse on the Deschutes. The conference brings together over 300 providers, policymakers, public health, hospital and clinic leaders to explore topics of importance to Oregonians living in rural communities and to share challenges and solutions. Stop by the OPHA exhibit booth!

  • Registration is open for the Youth Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Mental Health Summit held on October 20-21 in Corvallis, Oregon. The Youth IDD Mental Health Summit is an opportunity to meet, learn, and create professional relationships that can transform systems that serve support young people with both a mental health diagnosis and an intellectual or developmental disability. 

  • Registration is open for the 2024 American Public Health Association Annual Meeting and Expo, October 27-30,in Minneapolis. APHA is offering scholarships, stipends, and awards to attend this year's Annual Meeting. Join OPHA leadership and more than 12,000 public health professionals for this inspiring event!

  • Beat the Heat: CDC's New Heat and Health Initative webinar. Watch on-demand to explore the full scope of the CDC's Heat and Health Initiative, featuring the HeatRisk forecast tool, HHVI, public dashboard and new clinical guidance on heat.

 

Opportunities

  • The Public Health Preceptor Program is 6 sessions on Tuesdays from 9-10 am September 17 – November 19.  Explore this free opportunity to expand and strengthen your skills in public health precepting, offered by the Oregon ECHO Network. Topics will include internship logistics, scoping and managing a project, best practices and skills for giving and receiving feedback, and orienting learners to local and state public health context, including historical context. 

  • The Washington County Advisory Council on Racial Equity has three open positions. The Advisory Council on Racial Equity is a 15-member body that serves to advise the County Board in relation to their work to center and build racial equity, diversity and inclusion into the County’s budget, strategic plan, legislative agenda, policies, programmatic priorities, and departmental priorities.   • The EPA Inflation Reduction Act Community Change Grants Program is accepting applications on a rolling basis for $2 billion in Inflation Reduction Act funding available to support community-driven projects that will build capacity for communities to tackle environmental and climate justice challenges, strengthen their climate resilience, and advance clean energy.  Open until November 21.

  • The Oregon Health Authority is seeking dedicated individuals to join the Family Connects Oregon Regional Advisory Committees. As a committee member, you will play a crucial role in guiding the program, ensuring it meets the needs of diverse communities. Individuals from various backgrounds, including healthcare professionals, community leaders, parents, and anyone passionate about maternal and child health is encouraged to apply by September 30.
